Designer Focus – Rick Owens

July 30, 2015

Rick Owens aligns fresh American aesthetics with European refinement. Since 1994, the designer has produced some of the most provocative collections that convey powerful messages across several generations. The brand’s inception began in Los Angeles, California where he sold his clothes exclusively at Charles Gallay and garnered a cult following as a result. He began to show his collections at Paris Fashion Week, after years of creating his coveted pieces in Europe. He even proves that his clothes are sole artistic entities as collectors such as Phillipe Jousse and the Carpenters Workshop Gallery continue to showcase his selection.

Owens has always been a believer in minimalism and sticks to palettes he knows best—black and white. He has even tried his hand at furniture with the collection “Prehistoric” where he explored the friction between clothes and furniture. It was met with critical acclaim and he was solidified as the “godfather of brutal chic” shortly after. True to the motto that there is a woman behind every man, Rick Owens uses his wife Michele Lamy as his muse to produce functional and durable clothes every season. His signature designs consist of juxtaposition and contrast, which has led to awards such as the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Emerging Talent Award. He was also awarded a Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award and the Fashion Group International’s Rule Breaking award for his stimulating compilations. His clothes’ rebellious streak produces some of the most edgy alluring looks.
